Villancicos que se han de cantar…

Villancicos que se han de cantar…

Villancicos que se han de cantar…

This program features early courtly villancicos by such composers as Juan del Encina, from the sixteenth century by Francisco Guerrero, and pieces from the seventeenth century by Mateo Romero and Cristóbal Galán, both important composers in Madrid. The program also includes courtly Spanish instrumental works from the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, in addition to a few other surprises.

Villancico now refers to a Christmas carol in the Spanish-speaking world. At first, it was a courtly song in the late fifteenth century, its texts often referring to the villano, or peasant, yet another moment when nobility showed interest in, or mocked, their social inferiors. During the sixteenth century, the genre gradually became devotional in nature, Spanish texts sung in matins services on Christmas, Epiphany, and other feast days. During the seventeenth century, villancicos became ubiquitous in such a role throughout the Spanish-speaking world, sung at cathedrals, major churches, monasteries, and at the Royal Chapel in Madrid. The title of our concert is the title used for most published booklets with villancico texts for a particular service, meaning Villancicos that were sung… at a particular location.

 Cameron Dobson, countertenor

Caitlin Laird, soprano

Joy Laird, Baroque flute and recorders

Paul Laird, Baroque cello

Mary Jodice, harpsichord

Tickets: $10.00 (available at the door)

Time: Friday, March 15, 2024, 7:30 PM

Place: Somerville Music Spaces, 1060 Broadway C101B, Somerville, MA 02144

Re:Duo

RE:duo (“Reply Duo”) engages audiences with innovative programming that blurs the lines between a variety of artistic disciplines. Consisting of saxophonist, Wilson Poffenberger, and violist, Elsie Bae Han, the duo formed following an interdisciplinary collaboration exploring the intersection between sound and movement. RE:duo has since expanded its repertory to include works that feature theater, improvisation, movement, speech, as well as other performative elements. Both duo members founded and hold executive positions with New Music Mosaic, a new music collective dedicated to the dissemination of resources to artists. Through New Music Mosaic, RE:duo curates a series of concerts across the U.S. as a part of their biennial open call for scores initiative. Recognized nationally and internationally, RE:duo has performed most recently at conferences and institutions such as the International Saxophone Symposium, the Cortona Sessions for New Music, North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference, Valdosta State University, Georgia State University, the University of North Texas, and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

In preparation for the 2024 North American Saxophone Alliance National Conference in Stillwater, OK, RE: is presenting concerts in Boston and NYC consisting of music by Carrie Frey, Carolyn O'Brien, Huang Ruo, Drew Farrar, and a world premiere by NYC based composer Reinier Potgieter.

Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica

Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica

Our first 2024 concert with the quintet in a new location in Somerville! Note that we’re sold out for front-row seats and as of Jan 19th, 50% of seats are sold out. Help us kick off our Artesian Astra tour to MA, NM and KS with this exciting night of global jazz and exotic chamber music at Somerville Music Spaces.

About Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica - Quintet Formation

In the same way a chef de cuisine runs a kitchen, percussionist Brian O’Neill leads a team of five musical creators who deftly collaborate on instruments foreign and domestic to form modernist delicacies for hungry, curious listeners. From the high arts of jazz and chamber music to adaptations of mid-century exotica and pop art, the quintet version of Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica renders O’Neill’s original compositions and curious arrangements of Bach, Gershwin, Shostakovich and John Adams into cinematic, layered music for armchair travelers ready to journey off road.

While the quintet eschews most of the musical forms, rhythms, and styles of the 1950s exotica sound that inspired O’Neill, it fully embraces the unique genre’s love of escapism, whether through deliberate, out-of-context use of global sounds or through jazz improvisation that doesn’t swing and deliberately imitates the rhythm of a skipping record. On the listener’s plate might be equal parts scratch and sniff, bongos with a fugue, and a cat fight at a piano recital. On the stage, the ensemble skillfully negotiates detailed compositions and arrangements of classical works while relying on listening and instinct to drive passionate improvisation.

“engagingly unique”—Boston Globe

“anything but straightforward”—Washington Post

Cabaret Bouquet-Boston Text and Tone Festival

Cabaret Bouquet-Boston Text and Tone Festival

Boston Text and Tone Festival Concert III

Cabaret Bouquet

WHAT: Selections exploring the link between art song

and cabaret in various languages

WHERE: Somerville Music Spaces

1060 Broadway C101B, Somerville, MA 02144

WHEN: Saturday, Januaruy 20, 7:30 PM

WHO: Joanne Evans, Elias Dagher

The idea:

To create a festival of song, celebrating language as a doorway to experiencing the richness and diversity of human and musical expression.

Our friendship began while we were studying solo piano repertoire as conservatory students in Boston. As we started working more and more with singers in text-based music making, we experienced a new kind of expressive mixture, a collision of seemingly opposite worlds. The “abstract” world of music itself (open-ended, suggestive, spiritual) met the “literal” world of words (direct, structured, narrative)...Or is it the other way around?! Perhaps music is more literal and poetry more abstract! Whatever the case, there are infinite possibilities whenever these universes collide. Thanks to countless poets and composers over the past several hundred years, they have collided over and over again.

The mixing of language and music gives us not only a rich, varied, and ever-growing repertoire to explore; it also creates community. The inherent spirit of sharing in singer-pianist duo work immediately lends itself to human connection. And this type of connection doesn’t stay locked up in a practice room! We are lucky to be part of the community of singers, pianists, poets, composers, mentors, and audience members that naturally forms around the world of song.

Our plan:

With the first edition of the Boston Text and Tone Festival, coming in January, we hope to provide time and space for this community to come together. To this end, we have invited many wonderful artists–from spoken word performers to pianists to singers to Boston-area conservatory students–to participate in four consecutive days of music making.

To put the “text” in Text and Tone, each event will include poetry recitation, texts and translations of all works, and discussions of selected texts. We hope that this focus on text can provide an entryway into the world of song for people without musical backgrounds.

All are welcome.

-Elias Dagher and Pierre-Nicolas Colombat
